HALL OF JUSTICE—Wondertwins Zan and Jayna filed suit in the World Court against the International Olympic Committee today. Immediately after learning the mascot of the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy would be Neve and Gliz, a red ball of snow and a blue block of ice, “Superfriends” stars Zan and Jayna claimed their copyright and trademark have been infringed.
“We are known throughout this world and many others by our ability to morph into other things,” Zan Wondertwin explained. “‘Shape of an eagle maiden!' my sister might say right before I bellow, ‘Form of a block of ice!' It was our way into the Superfriends' Hall of Justice. And one of these mascots is a red snowball and the other is blue block of ice. And we're purple. It's all a little too coincidental. Our image is well documented and we look forward to seeing this out in a court of law.”
The text of the brief filed asserts that “Neve and Gliz, ball of snow and block of ice, bear an unlawful similarity to complainants Zan Chauncey Wondertwin and Jayna Liberty Wondertwin-Man.”
Jayna Wondertwin-Man, who married fellow hero and actor Aqua-Man after the show's run ended in 1983, added, “And what are their names? Neve and Gliz? Don't you think Gliz is a little close to Gleek, our little monkey sidekick? Good thing he's dead, or you know he'd be involved in this, too. And lord knows how annoying he was, may he rest in peace.”
Gleek Wondertwin died in 1987 after complications arose after tail surgery.
Attorneys for the Wondertwins explained that the siblings are not looking to ruin the spirit of the games, merely to restore their own intellectual property and unique standing as cultural icons.
“The ideals of friendship, fair play and competition are not unique to the Superfriends or the Olympic games. They are common to every one of us, even to the misguided members of the Axis of Evil and the Legion of Doom,” clarified Apache Chief, who will be representing the Wondertwins. “I just want to protect my clients' rights and, frankly, their earning potential.”
No official comment has been made by members of the IOC or the Turin Organizing Committee and phone calls to those groups have not been returned.
